The Percussion Department at Cleveland State University, Tom Freer, Coordinator and Matthew Bassett, Assistant Coordinator, offers a comprehensive performance curriculum with emphasis on orchestral and concert percussion. The department serves approximately 20 post-graduate, graduate, and undergraduate percussion students with its nine dedicated percussion practice rooms and unparalleled collection of modern and vintage instruments. Past CSU percussion students hold positions as music educators, arts administrators, and in major orchestras and ensembles around the world, including: the Buffalo Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco Opera Orchestra, Kennedy Center Opera Orchestra, and Air Force Band of Flight. Percussion activities at Case are open to all University students, regardless of major. Performance opportunities include Case Orchestra, Case Symphonic Winds, two Jazz Ensembles, and Case Percussion Ensemble. Students have 24-hour access to our rehearsal/practice facility where a comprehensive collection of professional-quality percussion instruments is housed.
The Department of Music at Case Western Reserve University offers a unique opportunity for an intensive liberal arts education within a first-class research institution and conservatory training in the context of the Joint Program with the Cleveland Institute of Music. BA programs include performance, music history, audio recording, theory, early music performance practices, and general musicianship, as well as a BS in music education. Graduate level offerings include the fields of musicology, music education, and early music performance practices, with MA, DMA, and Ph.D. degree programs available.
